Community Alert Network

Upper Makefield Township is embarking on the use of the Community Alert Network. The Community Alert Network is a sophisticated warning system that operates around the clock to alert residents of emergency/disaster information such as evacuation notices. The Community Alert Network utilizes a computerized data base of telephone numbers to automatically dial your local telephone number with a recorded emergency related message from the Upper Makefield Township Emergency Management Coordinator. Listed telephone numbers are programmed into this system at the Bucks County 911 center.

If you have a non-listed telephone number you would not be readily accessible to the Community Access Network. Should you want your unlisted number listed into the Community Access Network you may send your name, address, and unlisted telephone number to Upper Makefield Township, C/O Vicki Haug, 1076 Eagle Road, Newtown, Pa. 18940. Your unlisted telephone number will be treated confidentially.

Cell Towers

Upper Makefield Township presently has two Cellular Communications Towers located at the Thorpe Farm, Stoneybrook Rd and the Gunser Farm on Highland Road.

Federal regulations require that all Municipalities allow for the installation of cell towers if the carrier can demonstrate the need.

Nine years ago when the Township received its first tower building application the Board of Supervisors was very concerned about the reliability of the carrier's stated need for a tower, visual impact to surrounding properties, property values, health considerations and the need to limit the number of sites in the Township to as few as possible. As a result of the above, the Board hired a private consultant and held many public meetings where the carrier was required to substantiate the need for a tower.

To determine the most suitable sites, technical studies were performed and many sites were considered throughout the Township. After implementing of a new Zoning Ordinance we now have three designated sites; the Thorpe Farm, the Dudley Farm on Eagle Rd. just south of the Municipal Complex and the Gunser Farm on Highland Rd. The ordinance also requires that applicants shall provide for alternate design criteria in the form of stealth construction. Depending on the site, the tower design could be in the form of an artificial tree or silo.

Cingular Wireless is currently considering installing a third tower in Upper Makefield Township. All discussions will be held at public meetings as the process continues.
